Every pool has to pass an electrical bonding inspection during the construction phase. So your pool, when it was built, did meet local codes and was approved by an inspector. The main bonding wire that goes over to the equipment pad (which also bonds all the pool, deck, and handrails around the pool) has to be attached to any equipment that has a metal component. This includes all pumps, the heater, and some filters.
It is common for this wire to have become disconnected during the years since it was first built. If a new pump or heater has been installed, perhaps the bonding wire did not get attached. Other times a wire can be inadvertently kicked or stepped on and become un-attached. During our no-cost inspection, we make sure that the bonding wire has not become unattached to those pieces of equipment.
Additionally, we will check for a proper green grounding wire on the back of your pump. We take of the back plate to view the wires and make sure that there is a ground wire, and that it is snug under the grounding lug inside the motor.
These 2 requirements-bonding and grounding-insure that no one will be shocked by a stray current.
